Design and development of an integrated information system on solid waste management for El Salvador

This project supported El Salvador in strengthening monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) in the waste sector through the design and development of the Integrated Solid Waste Management Information System (SIGIR), in line with the Integrated Solid Waste Management and Recycling Promotion Law. The system centralizes data on waste generation, collection, recycling, disposal, and related infrastructure, enabling GHG reporting under the UNFCCC Enhanced Transparency Framework. The consultant provided the technical framework, database architecture, MRV methodologies, and capacity building for MARN staff, as well as governance and stakeholder engagement plans. SIGIR facilitates evidence-based policymaking, tracks progress on NDC commitments, promotes circular economy actions, and ensures sustainable operation and reporting for integrated waste management in El Salvador.
